The Columbus Ohio Zoo, founded in 1927, is spread over 82 acres and houses over 6000 animals. Thanks to the efforts of TV animalist Jack Hanna, the zoo is world-renowned.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of central Ohio's most visited attractions. The spacious wildlife santuary combines animal exhibits, rides, and lots of family fun.
The Columbus Zoo opened as a private venture in 1927. The operation was taken over by the City of Columbus in 1951. Jack Hanna, the Zoo's director from 1978 to 1993, brought the Columbus Zoo to national attention with his television appearances, books, and videos.
The Zoo has been committed to animal conservation efforts for over 20 years and has been recognized to its work with Manatees and the Bonobos of the Congo.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is home to over 6000 animals. Notable among them is CoCo, the first gorilla born in captivity. Now 50 years old, CoCo is still one of the zoo's main attractions.
New in 2006 was the "Asian Quest" exhibit. This open-air part of the zoo features tigers, sun bears, and palla cats.
In addition to the animal exhibits, the Zoo offers a number of seasonal animal shows and carnival rides, including an historic 1914 carrousel that once operates at nearby Olentangy Park.
The Columbus Zoo is located on the northwest side of Columbus, about 30 minutes from downtown.
The Zoo is open year-round. From Labor Day to Memorial Day, the Zoo is open from 9am to 5pm; the rest of the year, the Zoo is open from 9am to 6pm.
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (age 60 and older), $6 for those aged 2-11, and free for children under 2. Parking is $3. The Columbus Zoo offers a number of discounts throughout the year. Senior get in for $4 on Tuesdays. Franklin County (Columbus area) residents receive a 50 percent discount on Wednesdays, and in January and February the Zoo gives a 50 percent discount every day.
Facilities at the Zoo include stroller and wheelchair rental, picnic tables, Jack Hanna's Adventure Shop, and several food stands.
