Maumee Bay State Park is located on Lake Erie, 20 minutes east of Toledo, and close to the Lake Erie Islands. The park has two great beaches, a boardwalk hiking trail and a fine resort hotel and other camping.
The entrance for the park is off Ohio Route 2. Once you enter the park, the first left turn will take you to the park office, beaches and campgrounds. A right turn takes you to the Nature Center, cottages and golf. Information on the park is available at both the park office and Nature Center.
There are two beaches. There is a large sandy beach along with Lake Erie shoreline. Nearby, a more popular area is the beach surrounding the inland lake. This area has sand, with grass surrounding for a clean place to lay your blanket as you watch you family frolic in the guarded area.
Changing rooms and concessions are here, as well as rental area for paddleboats and canoes. There are large parking lots surrounding the beach area.
For those that like a larger nautical experience, Lake Erie offers excellent boating, with no limits on speed or size. There is a marina, and you can rent personal watercraft (Jet-Ski type) for use on the Lake.
There are many activities in the park, with picnic areas and hiking trails. The Nature Center offers informational exhibits, and connects to a 2-mile fully accessible boardwalk for a clean and safe trip through beautiful wetland areas, leading to an observation deck.
Other trails run through the park, including a trail to the aptly named Big Hill, which rises from the otherwise flat land to afford great views of the park and lakeshore. During the winter, the fun continues as the hiking trails turn into cross country skiing trails.
A challenging 18-hole golf course is located in the park. The Scottish Links course has no trees, but high grass awaits you if your aim is not true. You can purchase extra balls at the pro shop. Hunting is permitted in designated areas with a valid license.
The Maumee Bay Resort has a prime location overlooking the lake. The resort has 120 fine rooms, a full service restaurant, gift shop and snack bar. There is an indoor pool and game room, so the fun doesn’t stop on rainy days.
Within the park there are 24 fully equipped cabins and 252 campsites with electricity. There are showers, flush toilets and dumping stations, as well as a Camp Store for all your overnight needs. Recreational equipment is available for registered campers. Reservations are required for the cabins and recommended for the campsites.
With all the fun things to do, Maumee Bay is great place to spend a day or longer in Northern Ohio.
