The Circleville Pumpkin ShowA Festival of Fun and Food in Central Ohio
A guide to the Circleville Pumpkini Show, located just South of columbus, with s street fair with parades, fun and pumpkin flavored food.
For four days in mid-October, the downtown streets of Circleville Ohio are transformed into the Circleville Pumpkin Show, with food, exhibits, parades and fun, dedicated to the orange squash. The Show is over 100 years old, and gets better every year. Circleville is located about 30 miles south of Columbus on Route 23. The Show starts on the third Wednesday of October, and ends on that Saturday. Admission is free. The Show starts each day at 11 a.m. FoodThe streets are filled with hundreds of food vendors, many offering pumpkin flavored items. As you would expect, there are many pumpkin pie vendors, but there are also pumpkin donuts, pumpkin taffy, ice cream and even pumpkin flavored burgers, along with even more exotic dishes. Pumpkin is a wonderful flavoring, but there can be too much of a good thing. There is also standard fair food, including pizza, French fries and cold drinks. Other vendors provide French waffles and elephant ears. Alas, there is no pumpkin beer, as no alcohol is permitted on city streets. Each year, the Show’s bakers outdo themselves to create world’s largest pumpkin pie. EntertainmentThere are parades each day, each with a different theme, with floats and marching bands. A big event is the crowning of Miss Pumpkin Show, as well as Little Miss Pumpkin Show. There are buildings containing arts and crafts for viewing. There is a separate building for food exhibits, with a large selection of pumpkin pies. Near the north and east entrances, the largest pumpkins ever seen are stacked along the street. Some are over 1,000 pounds, and local farmers use all their expertise to compete for the title of largest pumpkin. There are the standard carnival rides, along with funhouse type shows that require admission. Most of the downtown businesses close to celebrate the Show, although some restaurants remain open, as do some fast food establishments nearby. There are games and contests for the kids, and musical groups and band concerts, all free. Parking and OtherParking is handled by Circleville civic organizations, and rates vary by how close you are to the Show. Resist the temptation to park in the first lot you see, as parking within a block of the Show will be available most times except for Saturday Afternoon. For your convenience, there are many portable toilets set up in the area. Fall is a great time to enjoy nature’s bounty and experience the hospitality and fun of the friendly people of Central Ohio at the Circleville Pumpkin Show.
